The tradition of wearing a costume on Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, has existed for centuries. During the Medieval era, the Celts would celebrate All Hallows’ Eve with a festival, known as Samhain.
This festival, which preempted the harsh winter months, when food was scarce and death was rife, was intended to frighten away spirits and ghosts. The Celts would build bonfires, light torches and parade through villages and towns, while wearing costumes made from animal furs and skins.
Many of these Medieval Samhain costumes were intended to resemble angels, saints and devils, which is why these costumes remain perennially popular. However, there are many more costume ideas to choose from and dressing up isn’t just for the kids.
Unique Halloween Costume Ideas
If you are one of those people who likes to stand out in the crowd, you might like to consider the kind of costume that very few people would think of wearing. These costumes are all available from various costume-hire companies, which means I’m not making them up!
Pac-Man, Blinky, Inky, Pinky and Clyde – Remember those simpler times, when computer games consisted of a yellow circle that went around eating dots, while being chased by four ghosts? If you’re heading to a party with four friends, why not consider this unusual group-costume choice.
Bacon and Egg – If you and your husband, or boyfriend, are trying to find a great couple’s costume for a Halloween party, why not go as this tasty breakfast favorite?
Twister – As in the game that ties you up in knots, not the tornado. In the male version, the Twister costume is a suit, for women, it’s a dress. In both cases, the outfit is covered in red, blue, yellow and green colored circles.
Man Eating Shark – Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…This costume is an open-mouthed shark with fake legs dangling from the jaws.
Whoopee Cushion – I don’t think any further explanation is required!
Scary Halloween Costume Ideas
If you’re more of a traditionalist and would prefer to stick to the ‘scary’ theme of Halloween, there are endless options for costumes. Here are just a few you might like to consider:
Vampire – Vampires are not only sexy and seductive, but they are also extremely fashionable at the moment.
Freddy Krueger – There are female variations on the Freddy Krueger costume, which provide a wonderfully sexy/scary combo.
Cruella De Vil – OK, she’s a Disney character, but she still scares me!
Zombie – Add a little fake blood and some eerie contact lenses to any costume and you can become a zombie. For example, try a zombie cheerleader, convict, prom queen – the possibilities are endless.
Sinister Clown – There is something inherently sinister about all clowns. However, some creative make-up can ensure that your clown has that slightly deranged and decidedly frightening appearance.
Of course, there are limitless options for Halloween costume ideas, and, bear in mind, that you don’t have to hire or buy an expensive ready-to-wear costume. Many of the above ideas could be created at home using a few inexpensive materials.
